From Bethel AME Church in Morristown:
The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity wants to spread a message of respect for young men in the community. That is the goal for the event it’s holding on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at the Morris County Library.
“Project Alpha” is a national health and wellness seminar, hosted by the Sigma Zeta Lambda chapter of the fraternity.
“The March of Dimes and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. began collaboratively implementing Project Alpha in 1980. This joint project is designed to provide young men with current and accurate information about healthy life choices and teen pregnancy prevention,” said Shakira W. Linzey, March of Dimes director of maternal infant health for the NY/NJ market
During the presentations, members of Alpha Phi Alpha will facilitate lessons that will empower attendees to make better decisions, while acting as a positive influence in their community. The impact goes beyond just making a difference for people you surround yourself with.
“The main message we want to communicate is respect yourself and respect others. If you do that, everything else can follow along,” said Rev Dr. Sidney Williams Jr., the chair of Project Alpha for the Sigma Zeta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha. Dr. Williams is also the senior pastor of the Bethel AME Church in Morristown.
For fraternity members, a valuable part of the seminar is providing the right resources for local kids that will protect their future. This includes having men outside of their own families that they can talk to about topics like these should questions arise.
Organizers added they wanted the young men to leave the event with positive energy, sending them off with the hope that they carry inspiration to become the change they want to see.
