In hopes of addressing health disparities for minority groups, the Albany NAACP held a health expo for community members on Saturday.
The event featured screenings and tests for those who have faced disparities from COVID exposure.
Also on display were different health and wellness groups offering services for Black, brown and economically disadvantaged communities.
It’s estimated that nearly 200 individuals participated in the event.
Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan was in attendance and says it’s time to start briefing these gaps in our health care system.
“We cannot go through this again where we have a health crisis that’s so disproportionally affects a community,” Sheehan said. “That is why now more than ever, now that we have lived through it and sadly and tragically seen people lose their lives, through it. Doing events like this is important.”
Sheehan also says she hopes the community can hold more events like this throughout the year to benefit underserved communities.
