How to use this book as a mindful conversation starter:
• Create a calming/positive environment to read the book together.
• Ask discovery questions to assist with seeing where your child’s emotions are on this topic.
o What do you think about the book, and about Skylar and Cole’s moms and uncles?
o Do you know of a different type of family dynamic that’s missing from the book?
• Actively listening to their answers will allow them the confidence and freedom to explore their own thoughts and feelings.
• When the questions are done, provide your emotions/thoughts on the same questions asked.
o Acknowledge and talk through the similarities and differences in your thoughts.
Use the book to focus on the characters and their situations. As a parent you can use that change of perspective to tie in your family’s principles and philosophies.
