From the numerous smoke shops to the floral skunk smell across campus, the cannabis plant seems inescapable here in Berkeley. If you’re like me and don’t want to deal with secondhand smoke or getting high, there are many alternative ways you can use the cannabis plant.
CBD tinctures and gummies
CBD oil tinctures are derived from strains of hemp and contain either oil or alcohol carriers. They are often absorbed under the tongue with a dropper or consumed in the form of a gummy. As someone who struggles with stress and falling asleep, CBD has played a huge role in helping to decrease my anxiety and allow me to relax. I enjoy the liquid in teas and baked goods, and I will sometimes pop a gummy before bed.
Cannabis topicals and balms
Cannabis contains phytochemicals that bind to cannabinoid receptors that can aid in pain relief in local areas of the skin. Cannabis topicals are also potent anti-inflammatories that can help with muscle pain, bruises, and swelling. I have friends and relatives who enjoy rubbing CBD balm onto their joints post-workout to offer temporary relief and help speed up recovery.
CBD body oils and lotions
Cannabinoids contain potent antioxidants and antimicrobial compounds which are highly beneficial for the health of the skin. CBD-infused beauty products such as soaps and moisturizers can help contribute towards anti-aging and acne control. After I take a shower, I enjoy rubbing on CBD-infused lotion to soothe my muscles while warding off body acne.
Hemp hearts
Hemp hearts are the seed of the cannabis plant and contain zero CBD or THC. They are classified as a superfood, containing high levels of vitamins and minerals and omega 3s and 6s. They are a great source of fiber, protein and healthy fats that can boost the nutritional content of any smoothie bowl. I like to sprinkle them on my cereal and yogurt bowls, and I often blend them into my smoothie recipes for an added nutritional boost.
Whether or not you’re someone who likes to get high, cannabis has something to offer to almost anyone. These products are relatively affordable, easy to use and highly versatile. The next time your friend invites you to a smoke sesh, you can shamelessly enjoy the relaxing and beautifying properties of your cannabis collection.
