Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev says he physically feels well and he is ready to kick off his clay season in Geneva. After suffering a surprise defeat to Hubert Hurkacz in the Miami Masters quarterfinal, Medvedev underwent a sports hernia surgery.

At the time, Medvedev said he would be out for a month or two, casting doubt over his French Open participation. Luckily, the recovery went well and Medvedev took a wildcard into this week’s ATP event in Geneva. Playing just one event leading up to the French Open is never ideal but in Medvedev’s case it’s still a good thing since he was in danger of missing the entire clay season.

“I feel great. [I] managed to get around I would say two weeks of good practice and one week of full practice. [I] decided that it’s going to be good to prepare [for the] French Open, to get some matches here. Some matches, hopefully more than one,” Medvedev said ahead of his comeback.

I’m feeling good. Physically, I’m feeling ready,” Medvedev said, per Sportskeeda.

Medvedev to start versus Richard Gasquet

Medvedev, seeded at No. 1, had a first round bye in Geneva. In the last-16, Medvedev will face French veteran Richard Gasquet, who defeated John Millman in the Geneva first round.

Clay is Medvedev’s weakest surface and it is not a secret that there is not much love between Medvedev and clay. “It’s never been easy for me on clay courts to straightaway start good,” Medvedev noted.

Medvedev will be making his Geneva debut when he takes on Gasquet in the round-of-16 at the tournament. After Geneva, Medvedev will make his sixth French Open appearance. Medvedev picked up four consecutive first round defeat at the French Open, before making the last-16 at the tournament last year.

It remains to be seen how far can Medvedev go this week in Geneva. Making a deep run in Geneva would certainly lift Medvedev’s confidence ahead of the French Open.
