She said the City of Sydney hoped to create a “people-focused street” with higher pedestrian activity and lower traffic levels.
Transport for NSW has provided in-principle approval for the project, as well as funding, according to the City of Sydney. However, the proposal will still need to be approved by the council in June this year.

A community consultation period will run until April 22, with construction expected to begin in early 2023 if the project receives the green light.
The City said it had worked closely with key tenants and owners of the street, including Fire and Rescue NSW which operates a fire station near Bathurst Street.

The new cycleway will connect to existing bike paths further north and south of Castlereagh Street which service the eastern suburbs, the inner west, north shore and southern parts of the city.
Trees will be planted along the length of the street as part of the new design, which also includes a peak hour bus lane and pick-up points for taxi services near the Castlereagh Boutique Hotel.
About three-quarters of trips made along Castlereagh Street are by pedestrians, according to the city, though they are currently only provided one-third of the street space.
The NSW government last week confirmed the winning design for the future northern Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway.
The 200-metre elevated pathway will provide cyclists access to the bridge without having to walk up flights of stairs.
