Free comprehensive training program teaches individuals to become fitness instructors
NYC Parks is seeking exercise enthusiasts for multiple opportunities with Shape Up NYC – the free group fitness program with locations across the five boroughs! New Yorkers interested in becoming fitness instructors are encouraged to apply for the 12-week training program and learn how to teach Shape Up classes. Certified fitness professionals can apply to become a part-time instructor in Staten Island or volunteer in the Bushwick, Queensbridge, or Stapleton neighborhoods this summer.
“Join the Shape Up NYC community and help make fitness fun for New Yorkers!” said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. “Whether learning how to teach classes or volunteering for the summer, participants will have the chance to strengthen their knowledge, flex their skills, and make a difference in the neighborhoods and communities they serve.”
Fitness Instructor Training
NYC Parks is offering its free comprehensive training program designed to teach individuals to become fitness instructors for Shape Up NYC. This training will be focused on teaching bootcamp or body conditioning classes for the general population or for a senior population or for those looking for a low impact class. After 12 weeks, trainees will start a six-month internship with Shape Up NYC, where they can apply the techniques and training methods they learned by leading their very own one-hour class each week. Upon completion of the training and internship, participants receive an NYC Parks Certificate of Completion.
The application is currently open until April 15, 2022. Interested participants can find more information and apply through the NYC Parks website.
Part-Time Fitness Instructor – Staten Island
Parks is hiring a certified fitness instructor to teach a minimum of four weekly classes in Staten Island. This is a part-time, temporary position with the option of outdoor, indoor, or virtual instruction, and class formats can include but are not limited to Zumba, low impact aerobics, kickboxing, and yoga. Applicants should have Group Fitness certification and/or a degree in Sports, Physical Education, or Exercise Science. For more information and to apply, visit the NYC Parks website.
Call for Volunteers
This summer, Shape Up NYC is looking for certified fitness professionals to teach classes in Bushwick (Brooklyn), Queensbridge (Queens), and Stapleton (Staten Island). These free, weekly one-hour classes will be open to the public and offered for a minimum of eight weeks. Volunteer instructors must be certified through a national fitness organization and will need to go through a virtual audition process. Applications are available on the NYC Service website.
