Random murder suspect Michael John Adenyi will be examined by a doctor next week to determine if he should be ordered to undergo an assessment to ascertain if he’s fit to stand trial.

Adenyi, 26, appeared briefly in provincial court Wednesday where his new lawyer, Curtis Mennie, asked that his case be adjourned to Monday so a doctor from the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre can speak to him to determine if a 30-day assessment is warranted.

Adenyi is charged with first-degree murder in what police say was the random killing of Vanessa Ladouceur, who was attacked in the 100 block of 10th Avenue S.E.

Around 6:40 a.m. on March 18, police were called to the area for reports of an assault.

Ladouceur, 30, who police say was fatally stabbed, was found unconscious. She died a short time later from her injuries.

Adenyi, who appeared in court remotely via closed-circuit TV from the Calgary Remand Centre, did not address court other than to confirm his identity for Judge Bruce Fraser.

Despite being charged less than two weeks ago, Adenyi is already on his second defence counsel.

Mennie appeared as agent for his initial lawyer, Tonii Roulston, asking that she be granted leave to withdraw from the case.

Mennie said he would be taking over as counsel of record.

Fraser said a psychiatrist will speak to Adenyi remotely on Monday to determine whether a full, 30-day assessment is warranted.

“Mr. Adenyi, you will see the doctor to determine fitness and he will see you at the remand centre,” the judge said.

Adenyi is charged with first-degree murder, meaning the prosecution is alleging the killing was planned and deliberate, or committed during the course of a select group of other offences, including sexual assault.

Police said investigators ruled out any connection between Adenyi and Ladouceur, saying her death was the result of a random attack.
